EDGY TOWN YANAKA
Yanaka has a fascinating history and a complex cultural collision. While the temple town culture originated from Kan'ei-ji Temple flourished, memories of the now-defunct huge ”yukaku” red-light district around Nezu Shrine remain. And a mixed culture of history in which it survived the Fire of Edo, the Great Kantō earthquake, and the fires of World War II. To the south lies the University of Tokyo and Ueno Onshi Park, both as an academic sanctuary.
Yanaka is a town that has memories of a time when complex cultural ""boundaries"" had been blurry and that embraces those memories and knows the old and shares the new.
We encourage you to experience closely the complex and richly colored cultural collision that lies deep within the beautiful streetscape of the town with temples.
